In yet another step forward in modern medicine, doctors at TX Hospital successfully performed a rare and complex brain surgery on a 26-year-old man. This patient was suffering from continuous focal seizures (epilepsy) occurring 5-10 times a day. The patient was diagnosed with a brain tumor near the speech area, which could cause permanent speech impairment if damaged during surgery.
The medical team led by neurosurgeon Dr. Naresh Kumar Gajjala cautiously opted for a special surgery called ‘awake craniotomy’. This procedure is especially used to remove tumors near speech and motor control areas. In ‘awake craniotomy’ the patient remains fully awake during the surgery so that speech and motor functions can be monitored, tests performed and the surgery continued.
The surgery was successfully completed with the help of the management team of Dr. Kirtikar Reddy, Dr. Deepak Raju and Mr. Ravindra Reddy. Neurosurgeon Dr. Naresh Kumar Gajjala and Chief Operating Officer of TX Group Hospitals Srikanth Vodnala said that the tumor was completely removed and the patient’s speech or motor functions were not affected. The patient had no seizures for three weeks postoperatively and made a full recovery.
“This Awake Craniotomy showcases the advanced medical capabilities of Tx Hospitals. Our team is committed to patient safety and better outcomes in managing high-risk neurological cases. This is setting new standards for our hospital,” said Srikanth Vodnala.
